Jim Lehrer will deliver the 2014 Wilson W. and Anne D. Wyatt Lecture at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 12 at Bellarmine University. Lehrer is an award-winning American journalist, best known for moderating U.S. presidential debates and serving as host of PBS NewsHour from 1976 to 2011.

The lecture, which is free and open to the public, takes place in the George G. Brown Center's Frazier Hall. Lehrer's lecture, titled "It Could be Worse," will offer his perspective on the current world of politics, government and journalism. [campus map]

Lehrer began his career as a newspaper reporter in Dallas, where he covered the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. In 1973, he partnered with Robert MacNeil to cover the Senate Watergate hearings for PBS. Together, they launched their long-running MacNeil/Lehrer PBS news program -- later becoming NewsHour, which Lehrer began hosting solo in 1995. Lehrer has moderated 12 presidential debates, starting in 1988. He lives in Washington, D.C., with his wife, novelist Kate Lehrer.

In addition to his work in journalism, Lehrer has also written several books, plays and screenplays. His most recent book, "Top Down," is a novel that explores issues surrounding the assassination of President Kennedy.

Wilson W. Wyatt and his wife, Anne, founded the Wilson W. and Anne D. Wyatt Lecture Series in 1990 to bring nationally-prominent speakers to Bellarmine and the Louisville community for discussions on politics and government. Past lecturers include former prime minister of the United Kingdom Sir Edward Heath, television news journalist Andrea Mitchell, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author Seymour Hersh, journalist and author Ray Suárez and Watergate journalist Bob Woodward. Lehrer's lecture will be the 15th in the series.
