Rugby team hosts Bellarmine Classic on Saturday
April 5, 2019

An encouraging weather forecast makes the Bellarmine Rugby Club's first-ever tournament
an enticing option for some weekend Bellarmine University fandom. The Bellarmine Classic
takes place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday at the university's campus recreation
fields, behind Bellarmine's Watterson Medical Center at 3430 Newburg Road. Free shuttles
will travel between the fields and the quad every 30 minutes and two food trucks -
Kona Ice and LATino - will be available. The event takes place rain or shine, although
Saturday's forecast includes afternoon sun with a high of 73. This is the first tournament
organized by the rugby team, which has been a club sport at Bellarmine since 2014. "The
Bellarmine Rugby club is very excited to host the first annual Bellarmine Classic,"
said Tim Engle, a Bellarmine player who is also the club's president. "This is a huge
step forward in the growth of this club. The rugby community here in Louisville has
been extremely supportive and we hope the greater Louisville community can come and
and see what have been working so hard on." Bellarmine's opponents this weekend are
club teams from Western Kentucky University, Taylor University and Wabash University.
The teams play seven-a-side games that last about 14 minutes each.
