Bellarmine University’s
theatre program will stage “Achilles in Sparta” to open its 2010-11 season in the Wyatt Center for the Arts’ Blackbox Theater, beginning October 22.
Student actors will use larger-than-life masks, life-size puppets and stylized movements to tell the story of a nation preparing for war after the abduction of Helen, their figurehead. “Achilles in Sparta” was written by Sharr White, and will be directed by Carlos Chavarria, who is academic director of Bellarmine’s theatre program.
“This is an incredible production,” said Chavarria. “It’s an opportunity to create ‘visual theatricality’ through the use of masks, puppets, movement, and sound and space -- something the students and I’m sure the community are not accustomed to seeing in theatre.”
The performances take place on October 22, 24, 28, 29 and 30. All performances begin at 8 p.m., except on Sunday, Oct. 24, which begins at 7 p.m. Admission is $10, or $5 for students and senior citizens. Tickets are available at the door, or by reservation

The play’s student actors include: Victoria Reibel, Patrick Jerger, Sydney Miller, Sarah Davis, Victoria DeRose, Sam Kloeker, Anne Baumer, Joey Clements, Drew Chambers, Callie Egbert, Ellen Davis and Jessica Starr.
Other performances planned for this season include one-act plays by Bruce Kane, on November 18-21; “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens, on December 2-5; “Hedda Gabler” by Henrik Ibsen, on February 11-13 and 17-19; short plays produced by students, on March 24-27; and “Crying Wolf” by Carlos Manuel, on April 14, 15 and 17.
