Free Tax Assistance for the Bellarmine Community

January 26, 2011

Bellarmine University is offering students and qualifying employees free assistance preparing and filing their income taxes, thanks to a new partnership with the Louisville Asset Building Coalition. The service is intended to help members of the Bellarmine community avoid filing fees and maximize their tax refunds.

The assisted self-preparation service utilizes fully-trained Bellarmine accounting majors in their senior year who are working to become Certified Public Accountants. The service will be available February 2 to April 15; the exact schedule is below. No appointments are necessary, but please arrive at least one hour prior to closing time.

Former Louisville Mayor Jerry Abramson, now an executive-in-residence at Bellarmine University, encourages students and qualifying staff to take advantage of the free tax preparation assistance.

MAKE AN APPOINTMENT
Don't delay! Tax services are available by appointment through April 15 by contacting either Alex Grow or Eric Jones by e-mail.
"Every dollar saved when you prepare and file your taxes is a dollar that you can apply to your expenses, or put in savings," said Abramson, who worked to make tax preparation services available for local families as mayor. "I'm excited that Bellarmine is offering this to students and staff at no charge."

Abramson noted that the free service can also help people find deductions for which they may not realize they are eligible, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit.

The free service is available to all Bellarmine students, along with staff members who earned no more than $49,000 in Adjusted Gross Income in 2010 or qualified for the Earned Income Tax Credit. Participants will be guided in electronically filing their U.S. and state taxes at no charge, via H&R At Home software. International students needing assistance with foreign tax filings should contact Eric Seto for Louisville locations offering international tax preparations.

To prepare for their filing, participants should gather all appropriate tax paperwork. A checklist is below. Those wishing to receive tax refunds by direct deposit into their bank account should bring their account and routing numbers.
