On Monday, February 10,
Bellarmine University's mathematics department presents a free lecture on new mathematics by Dr. Carl Cowen, a professor in the department of mathematical sciences at Indiana University- Purdue University Indianapolis and the director of their actuarial science program.
This event takes place in Wyatt Hall’s Cralle Theater at Bellarmine University, and begins at 7 p.m. [

The
new mathematics movement began in the 1950s when the way mathematics was taught changed into a more hands-on approach, in accordance with a set theory and an emphasis on principles. The presentation will point to the creation and use of new mathematics over the past century in everyday technology such as computers, MRIs, Google, ATMs and blockbuster movies. Cowen will also discuss how mathematics continues to develop.
This is the first lecture in a series titled "Mathematics and the Public Good." In this series, Bellarmine will bring researchers to the campus to present lectures about quantitatively understanding the world. These lectures are designed for talented high school students, area professionals and other members of the public.
