The Certificate in Health Professions Education is a 12-credit, fully-online post-master’s program designed for healthcare professionals who want to teach in academic, clinical, or hospital settings.

The program prepares educators across many fields including nursing, physical therapy, respiratory therapy, occupational therapy, athletic training, speech-language pathology, medical laboratory sciences, imaging sciences, radiation therapy, dental hygiene, and healthcare administration. Coursework covers student development theory, effective teaching strategies for classroom, online, clinical, and lab environments, and methods for evaluating student learning.

The certificate prepares students from diverse healthcare backgrounds for hospital-based education as well as clinical precepting. The program includes student development theories and pedagogical strategies for teaching in the classroom, online, clinical, and laboratory settings.

Program Highlights

The certificate prepares students from diverse healthcare backgrounds for hospital-based education as well as clinical precepting. All healthcare related providers are welcome including, but not limited to, nursing, physical therapy, respiratory therapy, occupational therapy, athletic training, speech-language pathology, medical laboratory sciences, imaging sciences, radiation therapy, child life specialists, dental hygiene, and health care administration.

The program includes student development theories as well as pedagogical strategies for teaching in the classroom, online, clinical, and laboratory settings. In addition, the program prepares graduates to evaluate student learning. Three one-credit-hour seminar courses complete the program required curriculum.

When does the program start?

The program starts each year in the fall semester. Students wishing to join the program in a different semester should consult with the chair for program of study options.

When do classes meet?

Classes are delivered in a fully online, asynchronous format.

How much time would I need to spend outside of class to be prepared for class?

On average, we recommend three hours outside of class to prepare for each hour of instruction. However, this will vary with the content of the courses(s) you are taking each semester.

Would I be eligible for any financial assistance?

Yes. You will want to file the FAFSA and apply for federal loans at fafsa.ed.gov. Graduate students are eligible for loans in the amount of $20,500 per academic year (fall, spring and summer) while enrolled.

Does the certificate program accept transfer credit?

The certificate program does not accept transfer credit.

Who teaches the certificate program courses?

The certificate program courses are taught by faculty who are experts in the field, as well as recognized professionals in online teaching.

Will I be assigned a program advisor who will mentor me and guide me through my course work?

Yes. The program chair serves as the advisor and mentor for certificate students.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must hold a master’s degree or professional doctorate with a minimum grade point average of 3.2 in all graduate coursework completed at the time of application.
