Roller Girl! summer 2013 35 * The name “Johnnie Knocks’Em” was inspired by actor/stunt performer Johnny Knoxville. “I really like him. He does really stupid stuff. That is kind of what roller derby is.” spring The amazing adventures of She stands poised on her skates, all senses alert. The whistle blows, and she explodes, picking up speed as she weaves and darts through traffic. Johnnie Knocks’Em* is a jammer for the Derby City Roller Girls. Her mission: pass as many opposing blockers as possible in each two-minute bout. She’s also the alter ego of Brooke Hernando ’12 of Louisville, an art major who dreams of working for a company like Disney or Marvel. How did this “quiet, awkward person” end up muscling her way around a track in front of cheering crowds?
