Compiled by Jason Cissell ’97 and Carla Carlton NeWS oN THe HiLL record-setting freshman class arrives onbellarmine campus More than 600 new freshmen – our largest-ever incom- ing class – arrived in August to take part in orientation activities and sign Bellarmine’s Book of Matriculation during convocation ceremonies before the start of classes. The Book of Matriculation is a Bellarmine tradition started in 1991 by Dr. Joseph J. McGowan. New students and their families visit Dr. McGowan’s office each year to add their names to a bound series of books recognizing students who have chosen to pursue their degree at Bellar- mine. Since 1991, 6,264 students have signed the book. The second volume was filled last year, so a new book was used to collect the names of this year’s incoming class. This year’s freshman class includes students from 22 u.S. states. roughly one-third of the freshmen are first-generation students who will be the first in their families to earn a college degree. This fall, 90 freshmen are enrolled in the new Galileo Learning Community, designed to support freshmen enrolled in several core classes. The students are studying together, taking part in academic and social activities, and sharing living space in Newman Hall. Commuter students enrolled in this community also have access to Newman when they graduate and enroll in college. The report noted that nearly one in five Bellarmine freshmen receive merit awards, averaging just over $19,000. When the Times crunched their numbers further, eliminating small schools and those awarding merit aid to small numbers of students, Bellarmine was in the top five of their “good bets for merit aid.” The newspaper’s report suggested that high school students with good grades and high test scores put colleges with generous merit aid programs at the top of their wish lists, to help keep college affordable. Meanwhile, when Forbes magazine released its annual rankings of U.S. colleges in August, Bellarmine climbed 121 spots on the 2012-13 list, to 224. fall 2012 15
