neWs on the hill Compiled by Jim Welp ’ 81 and Jason Cissell ’97 Buddhist mandala at Merton Center In November, a group of Tibetan Buddhist monks from the Drepung Gomang Monastery in Louisville constructed a sand mandala in the Merton Center as part of Bellarmine’s preparation for the Louisville visit from His Holiness the Dalai Lama in May. The monks constructed the Chenrezig mandala; Chenrezig is the Buddhist deity that serves as the personification of compassion. At Bellarmine, this mandala was dedicated to the friendship between the Dalai Lama and Thomas Merton. At the conclusion of the process, the monks poured the sand into Beargrass Creek.
