Why Use Rubrics and the VALUES Rubrics

Rubrics are very useful in guiding students to create quality responses to assignments and aid faculty greatly in the process of assessment.  Assessment is a vital part of the teaching process. When you post or give students rubrics for assignments, they know exactly what they need to include in the end product.  Moodle allows for the creation of rubrics you can grade from or simply post your own rubrics as Word document or PDF files in your course.  Both are easy to do.

The VALUES rubrics were created by AAC & U (the American Association of Colleges and Universities).  They cover written assignments, critical thinking, oral assignments and many other areas we often assess in our courses.  Check out the Kentucky CPE (Council for Postsecondary Education) website for all the rubrics (they appear at the end of the page) as well as some wonderful information on quality in assessment of student work--
