Econ professor Frank Raymond says tariffs ‘shrink the pie for everybody’

In an interview with Insider Louisville, Dr. Frank Raymond, an economics professor and associate dean of Bellarmine University’s W. Fielding Rubel School of Business, shared his perspective on tariffs like those recently proposed by President Donald Trump.

Raymond said he understands the President’s desire to protect U.S. steelworking jobs, but he doesn’t see tariffs as a solution, explaining that domestic steel producers will likely raise their prices to match the increased price of imported steel.

“When you impose tariffs, it shrinks the pie for everybody,” he told the publication.

Raymond’s research primarily focuses on mathematical modeling of issues in international development.

He teaches undergraduate and MBA courses with a focus on international development, macroeconomics and econometrics.
