Just in time for the holidays, a new book edited by the Rev. Clyde Crews -- “In Veritatis
Amore,” which chronicles Bellarmine University’s 67-year history -- will be published
on Thursday, December 7.
Bellarmine’s president, Dr. Susan M. Donovan, said “In Veritatis Amore” is essential
reading for every member of the Bellarmine community. “Whether you are new to Bellarmine
or a member of the pioneer class of 1954 -- or anywhere in between -- Father Clyde
Crews’ new illustrated history of the university and its campus is a must-read addition
to the home library of every Knight,” she said. “It truly captures the vision and
transformation of one of Louisville’s jewels -- Bellarmine University.”
“In Veritatis Amore," published by Bellarmine University Press, will be available
via the Bellarmine campus bookstore beginning December 7. The book, priced at $36.95,
can also be ordered online now at http://www.bellarmine.edu/in-veritatis-amore.
Crews said the richly-illustrated book seeks to “evoke the values and ethos that make
Bellarmine, to so many of its nearly 24,000 alums, a singular home.” Crews’ illustrated
account of the university’s history is a timeless piece that expresses the spirit
of Bellarmine.
“In Veritatis Amore” -- a nod to the university’s founding motto -- covers the university’s
predecessor institutions of higher education and spans the nearly 70 years of Bellarmine’s
transformation, from its origins as a fledgling college to a renowned university in
the 21st century. The book includes hundreds of historical photos and a section on
the history of Bellarmine athletics.
Crews is a 1966 Bellarmine graduate and former theology professor at the university.
In 2007, he was named Bellarmine’s university historian and archival coordinator.
Crews’ previous publications focus on religion in the U.S. and Louisville, including
“American & Catholic: A Popular History of Catholicism in the United States” and “An
American Holy Land: A History of the Archdiocese of Louisville.” He has also written
extensively about Louisville’s history, including “Crossings: Historic Journeys near
Louisville's Merton Square,” which tells the city’s history through stories of key
downtown street intersections.
