ROCK GUITAR

Are you ready to rock!?  This awesome guitar camp is for those future rock stars who’ve pictured themselves on stage, rocking out in front of millions of fans. In this beginning-level course, you learn the basics on rocking out to your favorite rock bands and power chords. You’ll also learn how to read music and how to string, tune, and repair the guitar.  Purchase required book ($15) from instructor at first class.

Instructor: Jody Ryan Jones is a professional musician who plays all style and genres of music.

REAL GUITAR IDOL

So, you think you’ve got what it takes to be a REAL guitar idol! This camp is for those who are already rocking and want a little edge over their peers. You’ll learn how to play with a real “LIVE” band, work on stage presence, and learn how to book your own gigs.  You’ll also learn how to solo like Slash, Jimi Hendrix, and Angus Young. MOVIE MAGIC

This computer-based course will help junior movie-makers translate creative ideas onto the screen. You’ll explore how to take better pictures, learn how to download pictures onto a computer, and critique each other’s photos during class. Then you’ll incorporate those pictures into a movie using all the features of Movie Maker software. You’ll learn how to edit your pictures into a continuous slideshow, adding graphics, music, and text.

Instructor: Mary Cooksey has been training users in various software applications for over 11 years.

WEB MONKEYS

Hey! Do you surf the web and wonder how a page is made? Come learn how to design your very own cool web page! Explore the basics of HTML. Then learn design tips and techniques as, in class, you create your personal page, complete with text, graphics, photographs, sound, and other “goodies.” Come monkey around with us!

LEGO® ENGINEERING

Great fun plus hands-on learning equals a super educational experience!  In this integrated science and math class, campers learn about gears, levers, wheels, axles, structures, forces, and more by DOING.  Campers pair up to build with advanced LEGO® parts and pieces, called LEGO® elements, which are not available in stores. They discover that learning engineering concepts actually can be FUN!

CRAZY SCIENCE

In this exciting science camp you’ll make oozy-gooey slime, watch clear liquids magically change color before your eyes, make your own eraser and super bouncy ball, invent your own carbonated drink, make a glowing blue concoction to examine why fire flies glow, make a dinosaur grow to many times its original size, and do many more awesome lab experiments.

DYNOMITE DINOSAURS CAMP     >>NEW<<

Dinosaurs come alive in this engaging camp involving your favorite carnivores and herbivores! You will create a lap book to take home and complete a variety of exciting hands-on projects! Of course no Dinosaur camp would be complete without some time in Dino-land... a fun center filled with dinos.

Instructor: Melissa Mooney, MA, has taught grades pre-k through sixth in a variety of settings. She is currently involved in the local homeschool community.

WRITE ON!

Bring your imagination, and we’ll provide the skills that are so important in becoming an effective writer.Through a series of fun activities and experiments, we'll create vivid descriptions, write some poetry,andwrite a personal narrative, an advertisement for a product you create,and a response to awork of literature. You're sure to learn a lot and have a great time doing so!

COMIC BOOK CONNECTION

Language arts have never been so much fun!  An Activity Booklet helps campers focus on the connection between creativity, art, and writing. Through Manuscript Starter, campers brainstorm, plot, and sketch their comic books on an identified theme. The planning of the manuscript leads to Comic Book Canvas, a template that provides campers with blank comic book panels for designing their final comic book creations.

Are you the next J.K. Rowling? Develop the skills you’ll need to author a fascinating short story.  Brainstorm plot ideas with your fellow campers, create and develop vivacious characters and settings, and make your story come to life with illustrations. Your finished product will be bound into a book that can be enjoyed for years to come!

Instructor: Lori McConnell, MAT, is a 4th and 5th grade Reading and Writing teacher at Coleridge-Taylor Elementary. Lori is in the process of acquiring her Montessori Certification from the North American Montessori Center.

G3 – GREAT GAINS IN GEOMETRY

Dominoes, Pentominoes, Hexominoes, Oh My! Learning geometric concepts can be “way cool” and fun. We’ll build towers with toothpicks and marshmallows, design rectangles with a limited number of cubes, and create colorful origami and artistic tessellations. Discover that hands-on activities can transform difficult geometry concepts into everyday skills.

Instructor:  Lisa L. Gimbel, MAT, has been enabling teachers and students to overcome math-phobia for over 7 years. She currently teaches at Noe Middle School.

A2 - AWESOME ALGEBRA

If you think algebra is “boring,” you obviously haven’t used chip boards, algebra tiles, and power trains to understand it. Discover that learning algebra CAN be totally awesome! Building balconies with rulers and pennies, using jolly ranchers to grasp properties and order of operations, and modeling equations with algebra tiles are a few user-friendly keys we’ll use to understand hard-core algebraic concepts. A2 makes learning algebra fun and interesting.

Learn the skills you need to earn high scores on the PSAT or SAT tests.  You’ll discover the solution logic behind every question from a past test and learn a high-scoring format for the essay section. Gain tips on how to work effectively and efficiently within the defined time allotments of the tests. Previous attendees have earned perfect scores on the SAT, PSAT and ACT and recognition as National Merit Scholars.

In this ONLINE course you learn how to design and modify your own exciting arcade-style video games. Discover how to control characters, objects, and outcomes in your game, then increase the difficulty level and add more features. Explore graphic and graphic animation. Would you like to be in the spotlight?  Learn lines, rehearse movements, and create characters on the way to producing a short play.Help put together simple props and costumes.  Invite your friends and family to see the finished product on Friday!  This exciting camp introduces you to basic acting skills while you have all the fun of performing onstage. Please note: Students will need to spend 1-2 hours outside of camp time learning their lines.

Instructor:  George Halitzka is a professional director, writer, and theatre educator based in Louisville. He’s passed along his passion for drama to hundreds of students of all ages!

CARTOONING FUN

Do you like to doodle? You may have hidden talent! In this fun camp you’ll explore how cartoonists draw and create comic books. You’ll develop your own ‘tooner’ skills, including story boarding and character development.  Learn about perspective and the basic proportions of the human face and body. Discover how to ink your pencil sketches and reproduce your own work. What fun!

Instructor: Ted Nathanson is an artist who creates books, comics, paintings, and drawings.  He teaches art classes all over the country to children, teenagers, and adults.

AMERICAN GIRL CELEBRATION CAMP             >>NEW<<

If you love American Girl dolls and books, this is the camp for you! We’ll take a walk back in time and visit several of the American Girls. While "in" each era we will discover the history of the period, create authentic crafts, and immerse ourselves in the manners and etiquette of the period.Some of the highlights of the week will be: a tea party...Samantha style; making mob caps with Felicity; grinding corn with Kaya; and more!
