LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Bellarmine University Office of Multicultural Affairs is taking approximately 40 students and faculty to Washington for the swearing-in of President-elect Barack Obama next week. Students were selected to attend based on an essay in which they described the personal and historic significance surrounding the inauguration, as well as how they support diversity on the Bellarmine campus. For those not attending in person, the office has partnered with campus ministry to host events on campus to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and observe the presidential inauguration.
On Tues., Jan. 20, participants in the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. march will carry lighted candles as they walk from the Quad to Frazier Hall, where a brief service will be followed by a viewing of the swearing-in ceremony. The march begins at 10:50 a.m. and the swearing-in ceremony is scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m.
The first annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Lecture will be held at 7 p.m. on Thurs., Jan. 22, in Frazier Hall. The speaker is Rev. Dr. Kevin W. Cosby, the senior pastor at St. Stephen Church and president of Simmons College, both in Louisville. The event is free and open to the public. Early arrival is encouraged to secure parking on campus.
