Event notice: “Out in the Country” presented by author Mary Gray, Ph.D.

LOUISVILLE, KY (Jan. 12, 2010) – Mary Gray, Ph.D. and author, “Out in the Country,” will speak at Bellarmine University on Jan. 14, in Hilary’s from 11 a.m. to noon. Gray will discuss youth, media and queer visibility in rural America. The Bellarmine University Office of Multicultural Affairs; Gay, Lesbian and Straight Society (GLASS); Ariel, Bellarmine’s Friendly English Society; and the Bellarmine Communication Association are the presentation sponsors. The event is free and open to the public.

Gray is assistant professor in the Department of Communication and Culture and adjunct professor of American studies, anthropology and gender studies at Indiana University, Bloomington. She also authored the book, “In Your Face: Stories from the Lives of Queer Youth.”

Also on Jan. 14, Bellarmine University will welcome Howard Zehr, Ph.D., who is nationally acclaimed for his work in the area of restorative justice. Restorative justice focuses on repairing the harm caused by and revealed by crime or wrongdoing. The process brings together those who have a stake in an offense, including the victim, offender, family members and community in an effort to heal all parties. Presentations by Zehr will be held in Frazier Hall on the Bellarmine campus at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m.

Zehr is professor of restorative justice at the Center for Justice & Peacebuilding, Eastern Mennonite University, Harrisonburg, Va.

Bellarmine University’s Sociology and Criminal Justice Studies Department, Center for Ethics and Social Justice, Theology Department, Interdisciplinary Core program and College of Education Center for Teaching Excellence and Leadership are co-sponsors of Zehr’s presentation, along with Just Solutions, the Peace Education Program, Society for Prevention of Aggressiveness and Violence Among Adolescents, Interfaith Paths to Peace, the Center for Interfaith Relations and the Louisville Peace Works Committee of the Louisville Bar Association.
