Veterans Day Message

November 10, 2021

Dear Bellarmine Community,

On approaching the 102nd celebration of Veterans Day tomorrow, November 11th, Bellarmine University wishes to recognize the sacrifices of the ordinary people who have accomplished extraordinary feats to protect American and global freedoms. Our campus believes in the sacred obligation to honor those who have served us with integrity, compassion, and valor. Bellarmine's military-affiliated student, faculty, and staff populations have grown 85% in the past four years. This growth has occurred due to our efforts to create a military-inclusive campus and because we treasure the freedoms that have been safeguarded for us by those who have been willing to answer the call of duty. Bellarmine honors every veteran across each generation and military branch for their dedication and sacrifice to our country.

The last 20 years of the U.S. military presence in Afghanistan has resulted in lives lost and tremendous hardships for veterans and families. This Veterans Day, we have the opportunity to come together as a community to show our support and respect to military service members as our country begins to heal following US intervention in Afghanistan. Healing will not be swift, but it will come when we stand united treating every day like it is Veterans Day.

In collaboration with our food service partner Sodexo and our bookstore partner Follett, I would like to invite our veterans and active duty students, faculty and staff to enjoy a free lunch or dinner on November 11 at the University Dining Hall (UDH) and a 10% discount at the bookstore on clothing and branded items as a small recognition of our gratitude.

"As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them." -- John F. Kennedy

With sincere appreciation,
Susan M. Donovan, PhD
President, Bellarmine University
