What is an internship?
An internship is an academically supervised learning experience that will provide practical and career-related experience for the student. The internship bridges classroom theory with professional practice. Internships allow Bellarmine students to obtain in-depth experience and on-the job-learning in the field of their choice. Internships may be part-time, full-time, non-paid, for credit, or non-credit.
How do I receive credit for one?
All internships for credit must have the department chair’s and dean’s approval, and will be supervised by a faculty sponsor. Interns must meet periodically during the semester with their faculty sponsor to report progress, and complete all assignments designated by their faculty sponsor.
How many credit hours can I receive for completing an internship?
For each one hour of academic credit, you need to document 30 hours of internship experience. For three academic credit hours, 90 hours of internship experience is required. Students are responsible for keeping track of their hours spent at the internship and need to turn in a log of your hours with your supervisor’s signature.
Who is eligible?
- Sophomores, juniors, seniors, and MBA students in good academic standing are eligible for internships.
- Freshman are encouraged to adjust to their new surroundings, concentrate on their studies, establish a good GPA, get some work experience in the summer, and think about internships in their sophomore, junior, and senior year.
How will experiencing an internship help me in the future?
Two specific goals the Psychology Department has set for its majors are to prepare students for graduate school and careers in psychology and to provide opportunities for experiential and applied learning. Encouraging and supporting students to participate in internships is one way the Psychology Department achieves these goals.
