Tired of typing in quiz questions on Moodle one at a time? Yes, that can be boring and tedious, but what can you do? With only a few formatting changes, you can easily import a question bank into Moodle and then add the questions to a Moodle quiz. There are two formats that make this possible:
1. Aiken
2. GIFT
Begin by creating a quiz on Moodle. To do this follow these steps:
1. In your course, click on Add an Activity or Resource.
2. Choose Quiz.
3. Give the quiz a name and fill out the behavior such as timing and how many attempts allowed and so forth.
4. Save and return to the main course page.
You now have the skeleton for the quiz.
Now, pull up your questions in Word or Notepad and format them as appropriate. More information on formatting an existing Word document or creating a new document in Notepad appears in two great videos, one for the Word document and Aiken format
here, and one for creating a document in Notepad and using the GIFT format
here.
Save the file as a text file and not as a Word file. Also, be sure to save the file as UTF-8 and not the default ANSI language.
Once you've formatted the questions, you can then feed them into Moodle's Question Bank, and create pools of questions from which you can choose (randomly or strategically), and populate those into the quiz's skeleton.
