Lucy Learned the Value of Support

Student Stories

By: Lucy Jakubiak, Exercise Science

When I was looking into colleges, I knew I wanted to go to one that had a physical therapy program, so I could do my undergrad and graduate schooling in the same place. Class sizes were a big deal for me as well. I knew I would learn better with smaller class sizes since I would be able to build a relationship with professors.

I also didn’t want to go too far from home, because I love living in the Louisville area and its where all my family is from. Bellarmine seemed to check off the boxes of thing I was looking for. Plus, I learned about the LEAP program for PT school, putting Bellarmine near the top of my list.

When I was in my junior year of high school, I start going on college visits. My Bellarmine tour was the second out of three scheduled. When I got to the campus, I absolutely fell in love with Bellarmine. I had a feeling of being in a place where I belonged that I didn’t get that at the other college I visited. The campus was beautiful, and I already knew that Bellarmine checked all of my other boxes. On the tour, I learned Bellarmine had the BUDC (Bellarmine University Dance Company). I had done dance all my life and when I found out I could still do dance in college without having to be on a dance team, Bellarmine became my number one pick.

After the tour was over, I knew Bellarmine was where I wanted to go, I canceled my other tour and started planning out my next steps to apply.  During my senior year I participated in All-Knighter. It was an overnight event for student who were planning on going to Bellarmine could meet each other and learn some more about Bellarmine. All Knighter is where I met my best friend and some of my roommates I live with now.

Currently, I am in my sophomore year and every day I’m glad I chose to go to Bellarmine. I have a great support system here, not only from the friends I made, but the faculty and staff. My advisor has been a great resource when I was trying to figure out what classes I took at JCTC could transfer. The tutoring center has helped me bring my grades up when I was struggling. They helped me find better ways to study.

All my professors have been super helpful while we try to navigate online classes this semester. I have one professor who opens class by asking us what we need from him to make what we are doing less stressful. I have another who has been hosting extra office hours on Sunday evenings, so we ask questions about our homework before we turn in it. All the staff at Bellarmine want to see their student succeed. That really is the Bellarmine difference.
