What I Learned About Making Friends at Bellarmine

Student Life

Starting college can feel like stepping into a whole new world — full of new faces, routines, and opportunities to connect. For many first-year students, figuring out how to make friends while balancing academics and campus life can feel overwhelming.

Bellarmine communication major Cheyenne Grogean shares her perspective on navigating those first few months and finding your community.

The college experience is close to what I imagine an alternate reality to be like – you’re walking into a new place full of new people, and the busy schedule of a student doesn’t leave much time for socializing. Making friends while juggling college life can feel daunting, but Bellarmine offers plenty of ways – both inside and outside the classroom – to connect.

It might seem a bit elementary, but the easiest way to make friends is to go out and talk to people. In my experience, the classroom is the best place to start. Chatting with classmates after a lecture or asking someone you sit next to if they’d like to study together for the next exam is a great way to get to know your peers.

This is especially true for classes specific to your major, because you’ll probably have classes together in the future, too. Even the online and hybrid courses offered at Bellarmine facilitate this: discussion posts, group work, and digital lounges are designed to encourage connection between students.

It’s easier said than done, but part of that process is just existing in public spaces. Instead of studying in your room, you might try going to the library or the Atrium in Centro, which, at the very least, is better than being cooped up all the time. Simply put, if there’s something you like to do, go to places where other people do the same thing. For example, if you enjoy exercise, consider visiting the SuRF and finding a workout buddy. It might seem awkward at first, but exploring will help you familiarize yourself with social circles on campus more than anything else.

If you prefer a more hands-on approach to meeting people, Bellarmine certainly doesn’t lack resources in that department. First and foremost is the Involvement Fair, which is typically held every semester, where registered student organizations (RSOs) have booths dedicated to everything from the beekeeping club to esports. The Bellarmine Engage site is another valuable resource that lists various activities and events on campus worth checking out.

The Bellarmine IMPACT is another big part of our school’s social climate – through programs like our learning communities, volunteer opportunities, and internships, you’ll meet students who care about the same things you do, while getting experience that boost your success after graduation. Making friends at Bellarmine isn’t about big gestures – simply showing up and being open-minded is more than enough to find your community.
