5 Things I Wish I Knew Before Starting My First Semester

Living on Campus

Bellarmine student Karmyn Perry learned that living on campus offers much more than convenience. From extra sleep and walkable access to classes, to finding community at events and using campus support services, she discovered how taking advantage of what’s available can transform daily life and help you thrive at Bellarmine. Here are the five things she wishes she had known before starting her first semester.

I Don’t Have to Wake Up as Early Since Everything Is Within Walking Distance

I wish I had known that the convenience of campus life meant I didn’t need to wake up at the crack of dawn to get to class on time! In high school, a long commute was normal, but in college, living within walking distance of everything—dorms, dining halls, and classrooms—is a huge time-saver. That extra half-hour of sleep or a more relaxed morning routine makes a big difference in starting the day feeling refreshed and ready to learn, rather than rushed or stressed.

There Are Plenty of Events to Attend

I wish I had fully realized that although I knew events existed and made sure to attend them, some people aren't as fortunate as I have been to witness the incredible value they provide. By not attending events, you miss more than just free food or a fun movie; you potentially miss your quickest chance to build community and discover where you belong. You pass up the casual encounters that turn into lasting friendships and the initial meetings of clubs that could shape your entire college experience. The biggest potential loss for those who choose to stay in their dorms is the sense of immediate connection to campus culture, which can make the early semester feel isolated when it could be vibrant and engaging.

Time Management Is Important:

I wish I had known how crucial proactive time management would be. College offers immense freedom, but that also means the responsibility to schedule everything—classes, study sessions, extracurriculars, and downtime—falls entirely on you. Learning to use a planner and treating study time like a non-negotiable appointment helps you stay on top of your workload, avoid last-minute stress, and still have plenty of time to enjoy social life without feeling overwhelmed.

Balancing Academic and Personal Life Is Key to Success:

I wish I had known that balancing academics and personal life isn’t just a nice idea–it’s absolutely essential for long-term success and avoiding burnout. In the beginning, it's tempting to either study constantly or prioritize social events, but neither approach is sustainable. Finding a healthy pattern means scheduling time for your studies and for your social life. This can happen by treating those personal moments, whether it’s hitting the gym, grabbing a meal with friends, or just watching a show, as non-negotiable appointments in your calendar. This balance prevents the feeling of being overwhelmed. When you have dedicated time for fun and rest, you return to your studies feeling refreshed and more focused, making your study sessions more efficient. Similarly, when you put in the academic work, you can fully enjoy your free time without the constant guilt of what you should be doing. It's about working smarter, not harder, and recognizing that your well-being is the foundation for performing your best in the classroom.

There Are Plenty of Resources If You Need Assistance:

I wish I had known that the college is full of incredible resources specifically designed to help students succeed, and that it's okay—even encouraged—to use them. Whether it's the tutoring center, the writing centers, the career development center, or mental health services, these support systems are readily available. The biggest mistake is thinking you have to figure everything out on your own. Reaching out for help early makes the whole college experience smoother and more successful.
