Top 5 Ways to Stay Organized During Finals Week

Student Success

Finals week is here, and Bellarmine student Karmyn Perry is sharing her top five strategies to stay organized, focused, and grounded during one of the busiest times of the semester.

Prioritize Mental and Physical Health

Maintaining strong mental and physical health is the foundational pillar of success during the intense period of finals week. Many students make the mistake of sacrificing sleep and nutrition for extra study hours, which often backfires by causing burnout, impairing cognitive function, and heightening anxiety levels. Prioritizing seven to nine hours of sleep per night is essential for memory consolidation, the process by which your brain stores what you learned. Furthermore, fueling your body with nutritious meals rather than excessive caffeine and sugary snacks provides the sustained energy required for long study sessions. Incorporating short breaks for physical activity, such as a quick walk or stretch, significantly reduces stress hormones and improves blood flow to the brain, ultimately making study time more effective and sustainable.
Create a Detailed Study Schedule

Developing and sticking to an all-inclusive, detailed study schedule transforms the chaotic reality of finals week into a manageable sequence of tasks. Instead of vaguely intending to study, a schedule forces specific time allocation for different subject areas and tasks. This approach ensures that all topics are covered without the last-minute scramble that often results in superficial learning. When creating your schedule, be realistic about the time required for tasks and include buffer time for unexpected delays. By visually mapping your week, you gain a sense of control over your workload, significantly reducing overall stress and helping you track your progress toward completion.

Breaking larger tasks into smaller ones

The sheer volume of material to review during finals can be exhausting. The effective strategy of breaking larger tasks into smaller, actionable steps, often referred to as “chunking”, makes the entire endeavor feel less daunting and more achievable. This approach provides clear, short-term goals that offer immediate satisfaction upon completion. These small wins build momentum and motivation, making it easier to maintain consistent effort across a long, challenging week. This method helps manage perceptions of the workload, ensuring steady progress rather than becoming overwhelmed by the overall shape.

Utilizing campus resources for assistance

You do not have to tackle finals week alone. Leveraging available campus resources provides a critical support system that can bridge gaps in your understanding. The university writing center can provide invaluable feedback on final papers and essay exams, helping you polish your arguments and grammar. Library staff are experts at navigating research databases, saving you precious time when looking for resources. Crucially, don’t hesitate to attend the professor's office hours. They can clarify confusing topics, suggest specific study strategies, and sometimes even offer insights into assessment formats. Proactively using these resources is a smart way to maximize your potential without having to figure everything out on your own.

Limit Distractions

Maximizing focus is the key to effective studying, and the most effective way to do so is to limit distractions strictly. Our modern environment is full of focus killers, particularly smartphones and social media notifications, which constantly pull attention away from academic material. To combat this, establish a dedicated, quiet study environment – whether that’s a silent floor of the library or a quiet corner of your living space. Use apps or settings that block distracting websites during study sessions. Simple changes like putting your phone on silent and placing it in another room, or using noise-canceling headphones, create a mental barrier that helps you remain immersed in your work, leading to deeper comprehension and retention.

Good luck on finals, Knights. You’ve got this.
