With spring approaching but winter still lingering in Louisville, Bellarmine communication major Cheyenne Grogean highlights five activities to enjoy around the city this season.
Nothing makes me want to curl up at home more than cold weather, and we’ve certainly seen enough of that recently, but winter doesn’t mean you have to stay inside all season. Whether you’re out to explore the unique nightlife or find some new hobbies (indoors, of course), Louisville offers plenty of entertainment even when the temperature drops. Here are five winter activities for Louisville residents.
1. Go Ice Skating
Ice skating is such a quintessential winter activity. Even if you spend most of your time on the ice falling as I do, it’s always fun to do with friends or a date. For students looking to lace up this season, you’re in luck – Alpine Ice Arena is a short 5-minute drive from Bellarmine. Admission is $10, skate rental is an additional $5, and you can find their public skating hours here.
2. Visit a Museum
Louisville offers tons of cool museums to explore, and visiting one is a great way to get out of the house this season. The Frazier Kentucky History Museum always has interesting exhibits, and the Kentucky Science Center offers interactive learning for kids. My personal favorite is the Speed Art Museum, known for its rotating exhibits and beautiful permanent collections. Adult tickets are typically $25, but admission is currently free on Sundays.
3. Catch a Show
With beautiful indoor venues like the Louisville Palace and the Kentucky Center for Performing Arts, winter is a great time to enjoy a live performance without braving the cold. For the romantics, Candlelight Concerts will be performing Vivaldi this Valentine’s Day – tickets can be found here.
4. Try Something New
Sometimes winter seems to drag on forever; for me, learning a new skill can break up that routine a bit. To get your creative juices flowing, visit Whet Your Palette for a Paint & Sip class or head to Paint Spot to try pottery painting. More active folks can grab a day pass at Climb Nulu to try indoor rock climbing for $15.
5. Go to a Silent Disco
Nightlife can feel a bit blah when it’s chilly out, so spice it up with a silent disco. Getting to choose your own music through wireless headphones means you can dance to whatever tunes you like best – plus, they’re usually hosted at local breweries, so you can support Louisville’s businesses. You can find various themed silent discos here.
