Undergraduate Certification Pathway

4-Year Undergraduate Certification Program for Mathematics Majors Only

NKSP scholars can obtain a dual degree in both BA Mathematics and in BS Secondary Education with a High School (Secondary) certification at the end of the 4th year, prior to graduation.

Noyce Scholarship is provided for junior and senior years in the amount of up to $19,200 per year. The total maximum amount for two years is $38,400. This Noyce scholarship will cover BU’s total cost of attendance after BU’s financial aid package.

Noyce scholars who receive Noyce scholarship under the Undergraduate Certification Pathway MUST teach for at least 4 years at JCPS or another high-need school district within 6 years after graduation.

Graduate Certification Pathway (Option 1)

5-Year (4 years undergraduate and 1 year post-baccalaureate graduate) Early Entry MAT Certification Program for Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology, and BMB majors

In the Early Entry MAT Certification Program, NKSP scholars can obtain a STEM degree at the end of the fourth year and MAT degree at the end of the fifth (post-baccalaureate) year with Middle or High School (Secondary) certification at the end of fifth year, prior to graduation. Students need to follow the Early Entry MAT Program curriculum in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology, and BMB.  The Early Entry MAT degree requires the completion of 12 MAT courses (36 credit hours). Students will take MAT courses (12 credit hours) in the senior year of their STEM degree that are counted towards the MAT degree. Graduate tuition expenses in the Senior year for the MAT courses are paid (waived) by the university.

In their fifth post-baccalaureate year, students will take 8 MAT courses (24 credit hours) - 3 in Summer (9 credit hours), 3 in Fall (9 credit hours), and 2 in Spring (6 credit hours). Additionally, students must successfully complete a minimum of 200 hours of field experience: 55 field hours in Fall of senior year, and 35 hours in Summer of MAT year (55 hours in Fall of MAT year and 55 hours in Spring of MAT year). Out of the 55 hours, 42 hours must be in classroom settings and 13 hours must be out of the classroom.

Stipend is provided for post-baccalaureate MAT year in the amount of $29,000 which covers full MAT Graduate Tuition and Fees of $16,560 in the MAT year with $10,000 for off-campus living expenses and $2,440 for miscellaneous expenses.

NKSP scholars who receive Noyce stipend under the Graduate Certification-Option 1 Pathway MUST teach for at least 2 years at JCPS or another high-need school district within 6 years after graduation.

Graduate Certification Pathways (Option 2)

2-Year Traditional MAT Certification Program in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology, and BMB

In the 2-Year Traditional MAT Certification Program, NKSP scholars who are STEM graduates or STEM professionals or career changers and have completed a bachelor’s degree in any STEM discipline are eligible can obtain Middle or High School (Secondary) certification at the end of 2nd year, prior to MAT graduation. Traditional MAT degree requires the completion of 12 MAT courses (36 credit hours) - 3 MAT courses (9 credit hours) in Fall of Year 1, 3 MAT courses (9 credit hours) in Spring of Year 1, and 3 MAT courses (9 credit hours) in Spring of Year 1, and 2 MAT courses (6 credit hours) in Summer of Year 1, 2 MAT courses (6 credit hours) in Fall of Year 2, and 2 MAT courses (6 credit hours) in Spring of Year 2. Additionally, students must successfully complete a minimum of 200 hours of field experience (55 field hours in Fall of MAT year, and 35 hours in Summer of MAT year, 55 hours in Fall of MAT year and 55 hours in Spring of MAT year). Out of the 55 hours, 42 hours must be in classroom settings and 13 hours must be out of the classroom.

Stipend is provided in the MAT 2nd year in the amount of $29,000 which covers full MAT Graduate Tuition and Fees of $24,840 for the two years with $4,160 for miscellaneous expenses.

NOTE: Noyce scholars can defer their first year’s MAT tuition payment until the start of their second MAT year once they receive their Noyce stipend. NKSP scholars who receive Noyce stipend under the Graduate Certification-Option 2 Pathway MUST teach for at least 2 years at JCPS or another high-need school district within 6 years after graduation.
