Bellarmine University 2008 Jazz Guitar Clinic and Concert announced

Bellarmine University and Director of Jazz Studies Jeff Sherman have announced the 22nd Annual Bellarmine Jazz Guitar Clinic and Concert will be held June 9 and 10. The clinic and concert will feature instruction and performances by Sherman and special guests Gene Bertoncini and Paul Bollenback.

The concert will take place Monday, June 9 in the Wyatt Center for the Arts on the Bellarmine campus at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for the concert are available in advance at Music-Go-Round on Hurstbourne Lane for $7. Tickets also will be available at the door for $10.

The clinic will be held June 9 and 10 in the Music Building on Bellarmine's campus. It will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both days and feature instruction on fingerboard theory, be-bop, ensemble, ear training, and more. Tuition is $100 and includes a ticket to the concert. Enrollment is limited.

Sherman is a teacher of jazz and classical guitar at Bellarmine University. He released his debut recording, Some Other Time, in August 2000. It features Sherman on guitar, Ben Ingram on upright bass and Bruce Morrow on drums. Sherman has studied guitar with C.C. Connors and Jimmy Raney and has a long and varied performance career including a tour with Marvin Gaye and the Saints. He also has recorded and performed with the Louisville Symphony Orchestra and headliners such as Ella Fitzgerald, Liza Minnelli, Bob Hope, Boots Randolph, Jamey Aebersold, and Jimmy Raney. In the summer of 2000, Sherman toured Europe with the Jerry Tolson Quartet opening for acts including the Pat Metheny Trio.

Bertoncini has firmly established himself as one of the most eloquent and versatile masters of the guitar. With elegance and ease, he bridges jazz, classical, pop, and bossa nova styles, integrating his own spontaneous and tasteful improvisations along the way. He has earned highest critical acclaim for his artistry on both the classical and electric guitar. Bertoncini has worked with the Metropolitan Opera orchestra, the Benny Goodman Sextet; singers Tony Bennett, Morgana King, Lena Horne, Vic Damone and Edye Gorme; jazzmen Buddy Rich, Wayne Shorter, Hubert Laws, and Paul Winter; and arranger/composers Burt Bacharach, Lalo Schifrin and Michel LeGrand, among others.

Jazz guitarist and composer Paul Bollenback has an emotionally expressive style and eclectic approach that has been described as unambiguous and powerful. His works have received recognition from Jim Fisch in 20th Century Guitar Magazine, the renowned jazz radio station WBGO in Newark, New Jersey and ‘Ndigo Magazine. He was also named Musician of the Year at the Washington Area Music Awards in 1997. Bollenback has worked with Stanley Turrentine, Gary Bartz, Joey DeFrancesco, Carter Jefferson, Herb Ellis, Jimmy Bruno and Sandip Burman.
