For the next several weeks, Bellarmine Magazine's weekly podcast -- The Pineapple -- will spend time with members of the Class of 2018, as they prepare to graduate on May 12.

This week, pre-med student Claudia Mort talks about her family, her involvement in campus life at Bellarmine and her plans after graduation.

PineapplePodcastOriginally from Mexico, Mort came to Bellarmine as a transfer student from her home in central Illinois, where she was her high school's valedictorian.

"In my family, we definitely emphasize how important education is," she said. "My mom, who grew up in Mexico, really struggled to be able to make it through college because she worked a lot. But she did it and she got a master's, so she emphasized how important it was."

Soon after she graduates, Mort will take the Medical College Admission Test, then use the next year to apply to medical school and spend some time with her family. She plans to become a pediatrician.

She's happy with the time she spent at Bellarmine. "I like that it's a small university where I can take on a project and follow it through and have the support to do it, along with the resources," she said. "I really feel like I can thrive in this type of environment."

The Pineapple is a weekly podcast produced by Bellarmine Magazine that provides listeners with exclusive content from the Bellarmine community.
