Internships and Career Opportunities

Bellarmine accounting students, freshmen through seniors, have the opportunity to obtain part-time internships with CPA firms, corporations, and government agencies. Full-time internships are often available to juniors and seniors. These paid internships provide students with professional accounting experience and employment opportunities upon graduation. Students should plan to interview each fall and spring semester for these positions.

Accounting employers now expect students to have accounting experience, through internships or other work experiences. Additional information can be found at Career Development.

Career Outlook

The United States Department of Labor notes that employment of accountants and auditors is expected to grow 16 percent from 2010 to 2020. There has been an increased focus on accounting in response to corporate scandals and recent financial crises. Stricter laws and regulations, particularly in the financial sector, will likely increase the demand for accounting services as organizations seek to comply with new standards. Additionally, tighter lending standards are expected to increase the importance of audits, as this is a key way for organizations to demonstrate their creditworthiness.

Entry level accounting jobs tend to see steady growth from year to year. According to the 2013 National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) Salary Survey, accounting students graduating in 2013 will earn starting salaries that exceed those in nearly every other field except engineering. Overall, the average salary for 2013 college graduates is $44,928, but accounting majors will earn an average of $53,300, which is up 7 percent from the class of 2012. Robert Half’s 2013 Salary Guide for Accounting and Finance predicts that accounting starting salaries will rise in 2013. For the Louisville market, Half notes the following for salaries in public accounting: starting salaries at midsize and large public accounting firms range from approximately $42,000 to $61,000 per year; and manager level (5-7 years of experience) salaries range from approximately $75,000 to $115,000 per year.
