LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Feb. 25, 2010) – Bellarmine University has created the Jack McGetrick Plaza and Locker Room in honor of the coach's dedication to the lacrosse community and his service as founding coach of the men's lacrosse program at Bellarmine. The facility expansion was announced Feb. 20, at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium and Joseph P. and Janet A. Clayton Field.
Through the generosity of anonymous donors, the expansion will allow Bellarmine to improve on a national level as a member of both the Eastern College Athletic Conference and NCAA Division I. The upgrade also enables Bellarmine to serve as the host institution for the 2010 NCAA Division II Fall Championship Festival scheduled for Nov. 30-Dec. 4.
McGetrick, who came to Bellarmine in 2004 to develop the men's lacrosse team, has continued his coaching duties while going through chemotherapy to treat prostate cancer. The lacrosse community has rallied behind the coach known affectionately as "Blackjack." Members of the lacrosse team recently got buzz haircuts to show support for McGetrick and the Intercollegiate Men's Lacrosse Coaches Association has initiated a series of benefit clinics and created the "Everyone Works for Jack" coaches emergency fund.
