Teaching Philosophy

Here is an excerpt from my Introductory Psychology 103 syllabus:

This Introductory Psychology class operates from the assumption that you are a proactive learner and that a significant amount of teaching will be from student to student.  This will be encouraged by the requirements for the class and by the use of student led discussion groups that will function as cooperative learning teams.  I will be a resource person, organizer, motivator and teacher; the text provides a common starting ground for your studies.  In the lectures I will cover material from the text and other material I think is important.  The discussion groups are designed to 1) increase your knowledge of psychology and 2) encourage you to think and talk creatively about psychology with other students.

A representative set of activities for a unit could include A) My presentation on the Chapter and/or related material  B) A whole class activity—discussion, video, exercise, experimental participation or related material  C) A small group/discussion group meeting D) A quiz over the relevant chapters and related material; the questions will primarily be from the assigned material, either the Griggs text or MindMatters2 CD,  but also will include questions on unique lecture material and class comments or discussion. This class has 9 quizzes and a Final Exam. With the Quizzes you can keep track of how you are doing. That frequent feedback helps you maximize your learning in this class.

As you can see, my teaching philosophy emphasizes student activity and participation.
