In-School Deferment Processing for Half- or Full-Time Students
Bellarmine University uses the National Student Clearinghouse (NSC) for enrollment and degree verifications. Each month during the academic term, the university submits an enrollment report to the NSC, which, in turn, verifies student enrollment to lending agencies. To be eligible for deferment, in most cases, the student must be enrolled at least half-time, and the student must have attended a course beyond the first week of the current semester. Future enrollment cannot be verified.
Most lenders and loan servicing organizations that participate in the NSC also participate in a paperless deferment process. With this process, no paper forms need to be completed by either student or schools – the student simply calls their servicer to request deferment and explain that Bellarmine University uses the National Student Clearinghouse for enrollment verifications. The servicer then requests the student’s enrollment information from the NSC to verify in-school status. If the student registered late or had an exception processed to their term registration, this information may not be reported until Bellarmine’s next NSC enrollment submission.
In-school deferment is generally automatic, so in most cases it isn’t necessary to complete the In-School Deferment Request. If your lender requests a deferment form to be processed, submit your completed form to our Registrar’s Office. Make sure any fields required by the borrower are filled in, including lender details. We forward all In-School Deferment forms to the NSC. They will confirm your enrollment and send it to your lender. Bellarmine University does not provide this information directly to lending agencies.
If you receive a collection letter from your servicer, you should:
- Call your lending agency to see if they received a deferment form from the NSC after they sent you the collection letter.
- Ask your lender to verify enrollment or degree information on the NSC’s website at https://www.studentclearinghouse.org/.
