Data are crucial to the development of robust, informative analytics and information system projects. Using leading relational database tools students examine the design and development of databases and warehouses optimized for transaction processing and query efficiency. To make sense of the vast amounts of data available, students employ concepts and techniques such as database analysis, forecasting, optimization methods, simulation modeling and network analysis in order to organize, analyze and make inferences about data from marketing, finance, the Internet, and social media.

Classes will be offered in-person and virtually. Students are expected to follow the course sequence to successfully complete the certificate.

THE ABA CERTIFICATE CURRICULUM

ABA Certificate students must complete the following courses in sequence:

  • MBA 611 Information Technology Management (3)

  •  MBA 661 Database Management Systems, Big Data and Analytics (3)

  • MBA 667 Advanced Methods in Analytics (3)

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I complete the Certificate if I already have a Master’s Degree?
Yes, the ABA Certificate will complement any graduate or undergraduate degree.

Do I need a Bachelor’s degree to complete the ABA Certificate?
Generally yes, although those with at least ten years of full-time work experience and a GMAT score of at least 600 may also be considered.

Can I transfer previous coursework towards the ABA Certificate?
With approval from the MBA Director, one may be able to transfer a course equivalent to MBA 602.

Is the ABA Certificate online?
The ABA Certificate is hybrid in nature. Classes meet on campus to facilitate mentoring and networking opportunities between students and faculty. Virtual access to lectures, labs and other materials allows students flexibility with work and family commitments when necessary.

Can I receive federal financial aid towards the ABA Certificate program?
Unfortunately, ABA Certificate students are not eligible to receive federally guaranteed loans or other federal financial aid. However, those completing the Analytics Concentration as part of the MBA program are eligible for federal aid.

Faculty Profiles

Here is a quick snapshot of a few of our faculty members.

Dr. Michael D. Mattei
Dr. Mattei is currently Professor of MIS and Entrepreneurship in the Rubel School of Business at Bellarmine University. Dr. Mattei holds a BS and MS in Engineering from the University of Cincinnati, a MBA in Finance from Indiana University, Bloomington, and a Ph.D. in Computer Engineering from the University of Louisville. Prior to returning to faculty, he was Dean of IT and the School Professional Studies, Executive Director of the Bellarmine Center for Technology and Entrepreneurship and Chairman of the Business Department. His 15 years of corporate experience includes VP of IT for IMX, Inc., a $12 million VC funded high-tech start-up, Manager of Marketing Systems for Brown and Williamson Tobacco, manufacturing supervisor at Cincinnati Milacron and design engineer for the Space Division of General Electric. He serves on the Endowment Committee of the National Center for Family Learning and provides technical support to the Louisville Regional Science and Engineering Fair. Dr. Mattei served two years as President of Venture Connectors of Louisville and four years as VP of Programs.

Ron Newton
After earning his BA in Math/Secondary Education from Bellarmine, Mr. Newton spent 25 years teaching Math and Statistics at a secondary school in Louisville, where he began a very successful AP Statistics program. He also served as an adjunct at Sullivan University and Spalding University. He earned his MEd from the University of Louisville and his MA in Instructional Leadership from Bellarmine. He was a member of the first cohort for the Master of Science in Analytics from Bellarmine University. He worked for three and a half years as a Data Analyst for RxCrossroads by McKesson, a specialty pharmacy, before returning to the classroom this semester as Instructor of Analytics.

Dr. Francis E. Raymond

Dr. Francis E. Raymond

Dr. Raymond is Professor of Economics, Associate Dean of the Rubel School of Business, and MBA Director. He served as chair of the Department of Finance and Economics for over 12 years. He received his BA in Mathematics at The College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts, his MS in Mathematics at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and his PhD in Economics at Indiana University-Bloomington. His research and teaching focus on issues in international development, macroeconomics and econometrics.  He has coordinated student consulting projects using econometric analytics with Schneider Electric, Sortino Advisory Partners, Papa John's, America Place Commercial Real Estate, Louisville Urban League, Jewish Foundation of Louisville, Brown-Forman and others.

Admission Requirements

Interested students should possess a bachelor’s degree with the equivalent of a course in elementary statistics or comparable academic or professional skills as determined by the MBA Director. Applicants will provide a completed application form, two letters of recommendation and an essay describing how they expect this certificate to enhance their career options. A GMAT, GRE or other comparable graduate entrance exam is required for those with less than seven years full-time work experience. In cases where one’s previous academic or work experience using scientific or mathematical methods is unclear (as decided by MBA Director), we will require the GMAT regardless of years of work experience.

Note:  If an Applied Business Analytics Certificate student wishes to pursue the MBA at any point, he or she will be required to apply separately to the MBA program. Successfully completed MBA analytics courses will subsequently be applied to the MBA degree upon acceptance to the MBA program.
