How to Get Help for Yourself

Sexual discrimination, harassment and misconduct can happen to anyone.  While we strive at Bellarmine to create an inclusive environment free from such instances, we acknowledge that misconduct of this type can happen at Bellarmine and can impact faculty and staff whether the concern originates on campus or at home.  If you have or are currently experiencing sexual misconduct, we encourage you to seek out support and resources.

How to Help a BU Student

Responsible Employee

All employees of Bellarmine University (including full-time faculty, coaching staff, and Residence Life student staff) are considered Mandatory Reporters with an obligation to share any information related to sexual discrimination, harassment and misconduct that they are made aware of when it involves a member of our campus community (both students and employees).

If a student discloses to you, we encourage you to:

  • Listen without judgement.
  • Utilize language that they utilize as they speak about their experience.
  • Ensure that they currently feel safe. If they do not, please call the Office of Public Safety immediately to assist.
  • Gently encourage them to seek support from trusted friends, family members, the Bellarmine Counseling Center or the Center for Women and Families.
  • Inform them of your duty to report the information they have shared with the Title IX Office.
  • Seek support for yourself as you process the information that was shared with you.

Reporting Disclosures

Please report the information that you have learned from the disclosure directly to the Chief Title IX Officer. This can be done by phone 502.272.7337, email aschumache01@bellarmine.edu or in person Centro, Treece Hall, room 225-C.

You must report all known information, including names and details of the incident(s). It is required that reports be made to the Title IX Office as soon as possible, but no later than 24 hours after the disclosure is made to you so that we can ensure appropriate support and documentation.

What Happens After a Report is Made?

The Interim Chief Title IX Officer will reach out by email to the individual who disclosed. In that email they will be offered the opportunity to meet with the Title IX Officer, be offered support and reporting options. In most cases folks are not required to meet, unless there is significant and credible concern for the safety of the individual or campus community.

How to Help a Fellow Employee or Friend

Listening Tips

  • Listen without judgement.
  • Utilize language that they utilize as they speak about their experience.
  • Ensure that they currently feel safe.  If they do not, please call the Office of Public Safety immediately to assist if the individual is on campus. If the individual is off campus, please call Louisville Metro Police Department (911).
  • Gently encourage them to seek support from trusted friends, family members, the free counseling available through the Employee Assistance Program or the free and confidential support available through the Center for Women and Families.
  • Inform them of your duty to report the information they have shared with the Title IX Office.
  • Seek support for yourself as you process the information that was shared with you.

Encouraging Safety

If you are concerned for their ongoing safety, especially in instances of domestic violence, dating violence and stalking, please gently share your concern with them. It may be helpful for you to seek outside resources through the Center for Women and Families to gain some skills on how best to support them through a very difficult situation. Every situation is unique, however instances of this nature can often turn violent quickly. Therefore, we encourage you to not intervene without first consulting experts.

It typically takes an individual around 7 exposures to the suggestion of seeking help for someone to follow through with action. Please be patient with your coworker or friend as they work through this process.

Connect to Support

It is important to remember that as we support and encourage others to seek resources, we could likely benefit from support as well. It can be challenging to provide ongoing support to coworkers and friends. Remember, if you are not a trained therapist, your role is as a concerned colleague or friend. Please consider seeking support for yourself as well.
