LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Jan. 13, 2010) -- Bellarmine University has named 624 students to the dean's list for fall 2009. The dean's list recognizes students who receive a grade point average of 3.5 or above on a 4.0 scale. For the complete list of students, please click more.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Jan. 13, 2010) - It's that time of year again! Relay for Life kicks off this Thursday, Jan. 14, in the café area of Horrigan Hall.

LOUISVILLE, KY (Jan. 12, 2010) – Mary Gray, Ph.D. and author, “Out in the Country,” will speak at Bellarmine University on Jan. 14, in Hilary’s from 11 a.m. to noon. Gray will discuss youth, media and queer visibility in rural America. The Bellarmine University Office of Multicultural Affairs; Gay, Lesbian and Straight Society (GLASS); Ariel, Bellarmine’s Friendly English Society; and the Bellarmine Communication Association are the presentation sponsors. The event is free and open to the public.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Jan. 6, 2010) – Bellarmine University will welcome Howard Zehr, Ph.D., who is nationally acclaimed for his work in the area of restorative justice, on Jan. 14. Restorative justice focuses on repairing the harm caused by and revealed by crime or wrongdoing. The process brings together those who have a stake in an offense, including the victim, offender, family members and community in an effort to heal all parties. The presentation will be held in Frazier Hall on the Bellarmine campus at 7 p.m.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Dec. 16, 2009) – Bellarmine University will award 232 degrees during its annual December commencement exercises today. The graduate(s) with the highest cumulative grade point average will receive the Archbishop’s Medal of Scholastic Excellence. Ceremonies begin at 5 p.m. in Knights Hall, with a commencement address from Bob Edwards, a native of Louisville and host of “The Bob Edwards Show” on Sirius XM Radio and “Bob Edwards Weekend,” distributed to public radio stations by Public Radio International (PRI).

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Dec. 1, 2009) – Bellarmine students experience a high level of academic challenge and excellent student-faculty interaction, and they are more likely to be involved in the community through service and internships than students at the national level and those who attend Kentucky four-year public schools, according to the latest National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE).

LOUISVILLE, Ky (Nov. 25, 2009) -- As part of our commitment to sustainability, Bellarmine University is installing a geothermal field that will heat and cool five campus buildings. Throughout the construction process, the project contractor, Parco Constructors of Louisville, has worked with the Louisville Metropolitan Sewer District (MSD) to monitor the amount of limestone dust – a non-hazardous material – that runs off the property from drilling. On Oct. 29, MSD instructed the contractor to stop work to install additional filtering systems after limestone dust and water silt from the project entered Beargrass Creek. Once the contractor had complied with additional MSD requirements, the project was cleared to continue.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Bellarmine University physics and biology students finished strong in competition at the annual Kentucky Academy of Science meeting Nov. 13-14 at Northern Kentucky University in Highland Heights.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The 2009 International Year of Astronomy marks the 400th anniversary of Galileo Galilei's first telescopic view of the heavens. Bellarmine University and the University of Louisville are joining the celebration with an unveiling of unprecedented new NASA images of our galaxy and a panel discussion on Nov. 19.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The United Nations says more than 300,000 people have died in the conflict in Darfur, Sudan, which the United States has recognized as genocide. Bellarmine University will host a discussion on the situation in Darfur lead by Jerry Fowler of the Save Darfur Coalition on Thursday, Nov. 12, at 11:00 a.m. The event will be held in Hilary’s in Horrigan Hall on the Bellarmine University campus. The event is free and open to the public.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Nov. 3, 2009) – What is the possibility of finding another Earth? To date, scientists have discovered more than 400 extrasolar planets -- planets that orbit a star outside of our solar system. But finding a rocky, potentially habitable, Earth-like planet is a key goal that has so far eluded even the most advanced space-based telescopes. NASA, via the Kentucky Space Grant Consortium, has awarded Bellarmine University Physics Professor Akhtar Mahmood and his students a $25,000 grant to assist scientists from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), Pasadena, Calif., on a new space-based mission that will search nearby stars for Earth-sized planets.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Oct. 21, 2009) – Author Dava Sobel will present the 2009 Guarnaschelli Lecture on Thursday, Oct. 29, 7:30 p.m. in Frazier Hall at Bellarmine University. The lecture is free and open to the public. In her book "Galileo's Daughter," Sobel explores the life of the Italian scientist Galileo Galilei through letters he exchanged with his eldest daughter, the cloistered nun Suor Maria Celeste.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Oct. 19, 2009) - Bellarmine University residence halls will host community trick-or-treating Oct. 26 from 6 to 8 p.m. The event is open to parents and costumed children of all ages. Students will provide games, food, prizes, candy and haunted halls for a not-too-spooky thrill.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Oct. 19, 2009) - The Thomas Merton Center at Bellarmine University will host a talk by scholar and author Bonnie B. Thurston, one of the founding members of the International Thomas Merton Society, on Oct. 26, 7 p.m., Hilary's in Horrigan Hall. The lecture is free and open to the public.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Oct. 14, 2009) – Bellarmine University will "knight" Leonard M. Spalding ('59) at the university's annual Knight of Knights black-tie dinner and dance celebration on Saturday, Oct. 17.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Oct. 5, 2009) – Bellarmine University and Louisville Metro EMS announced today that the Bellarmine Emergency Response Team, known as BERT, has been approved to provide emergency medical services at campus events. The team is among a select group of university-sponsored emergency medical groups comprised entirely of student volunteers.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Sept. 29, 2009) – Media are invited to join a thoughtful discussion about the economy free from left and right rhetoric on Wednesday, Oct. 7 at 5:30 p.m. in the Amy Cralle Theater, Wyatt Center for the Arts. Faculty from the Department of Economics and Finance will take questions from reporters and audience members about what recession and recovery efforts really mean, discuss proposals for a realistic fix and help put the current situation into historical context.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Sept. 16, 2009) – Bellarmine University will honor Robert G. Bader at its 25th annual accounting alumni luncheon at 11:30 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 24. The alumni association also will honor the 2009-2010 scholarship recipients during the luncheon in Frazier Hall on the Bellarmine Campus.
